Over the last couple of days, there has been a steady increase in the number cases registered against Dengue in the city of Mumbai. Me, belonging from a typical Indian Family practiced, what anyone would do normally during rains, i.e. not eating out, eating healthy, etc.

As my colleagues and I worked, a lot of us came across the DHFL Pramerica Dengue Insurance offers on the Internet, and as most of my colleagues signed up for their service, I did the same, thinking it’s just 365 Rupees and it couldn’t hurt.

Funnily enough exactly 4 days after me signing up for the service, I started to get a mild fever in the afternoon, and much like everyone else, I popped in a Paracetamol, thinking this will all go away soon.

However, as the temperature increased overnight  I thought its best to visit a doctor, and so I did the following morning. Upon inspection, the doctor said that it’s too early to detect if this is just a seasonal one-time fever or is it something worse. He suggested that with Dengue Fever on the rise, it’s best that we have the blood tests done because it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Later that evening, the reports came back and little did I know, I had Dengue Fever.

The doctor advised that I need to be admitted to the hospital to be treated well so that the illness can go away in days, and if neglected it could be fatal for me.

As I got admitted into the hospital and my family got worried up upon the fact their son has to be admitted into the hospital, and trying to take good care of me, they got me into one of the best hospitals in the city.

For me, I thought it’s going to be an expensive affair as the doctor suggested that over the next few days I will have to follow a strict Liquid Diet coupled with heavy medicines that will take a toll on my body.

As I lay in bed, my joints started to cramp up with severe pain, my body got covered in red rashes and I just could not take in the AC anymore as my temperature rose and dropped in hours.

To be honest, it was one of the most horrible experiences of my life, as I took great pride in the fact that I had not fallen ill in the past year, and now here I was, in a hospital, not able to move and thinking how I got here in the first place.

My friends, and families all came in to visit, and while talking to them about Dengue Fever I was glad I had signed up for insurance. Honestly, the amount was so small that I had forgotten that I had even signed up for an insurance, as normally we expect insurances to be recurring and in big amounts. This results in us practically never forgetting about our insurance premiums.

The following day I requested my father to get in touch with DPLI and claim for our insurance. As surprised as my family was to the fact that I had taken up a Dengue Insurance, what they loved was the fact that DPLI was proactive and cleared all the paperwork and the costs almost simultaneously as I got better.

Thanks to them the hospital bills was something that we never had to see because they were all been taken care of, and we did not have to pay for a single paisa additionally.

Considering this I personally recommended the service to everyone, from family, friends, and colleagues, and recommend it to everyone so that sudden hospitalization expenses do not hurt your long term finances

You may not know when you will be sick, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.  It’s good to sign up for these small services as you never know how or when they will help you.
