Being an avid animal lover, Purabi Patra is known for her weakness towards animals. Being a management professional to a shelter house owner. In a conversation with Yournib – she said ‘Once an animal rescuer, forever an animal lover.’
What inspired you to be an animal lover?
I have been a dog lover since childhood while watching pets at my grandparents’ house. But my parents never allowed me to keep any pet at my place. But when I was around 3-year-old. I used to carry the puppies to my house from the road. Maybe that was the first what I remembered.
Did you work with any organization?
I was into teaching profession (management professor) and was having eight years of career, before giving up on my job for getting into this cause. Before starting my own NGO, Animal Welfare Trust Ekamra, I have been volunteered with many renowned animal shelters in Delhi like Maneka Gandhi’s SGACC, SPCA Noida, Fauna Police, Friendicoes etc.
What tips would you like to give share with Yournib readers?
It’s not necessary that you should love animals, care for them. If you don’t, it’s ok but doesn’t hurt them, let them live with equal rights on this earth. We all are earthlings and Humans shouldn’t behave as a master to them just because they are voiceless.
What were the challenges that you faced when you started doing this activity?
The challenges are still on. Every day, I face new challenges. Initially, there was a little disapproval from my family when I decided to live my life in this way. But gradually they accepted. But in my state, there was no concept of animal welfare, so starting from grassroots it was extremely difficult and tiring. I used to work 24/7 staying alone at my shelter, was facing issues to get good manpower to work on this field. But things have been a little better right now.
Future aim?
Just want to save as many animals as possible. Be it through rescue awareness, promoting veganism or Whatsoever.
